Big news + other stories of triumph // Episode 16

We’re gonna be on tv!!!

But, that’s not all. We have lots to share with you today – everything from our response to global news (i.e. President Trump) to personal triumphs to some VERY exciting upcoming events + plans.

We’d actually like to think that today’s podcast is just one of the ways that Lina + I can raise our voices, challenge the status quo, and make a difference in the world.

You know, yesterday was a tough day.

But, today is a new day. A powerful one. As I type this, people all over the world are flying in to Washington, DC and gathering in other global cities to march. What they are marching for… well, that’s personal business. But, there are some common threads. Justice, equality, for those who have lost their voices + may lose their rights under this new administration, for healthcare, women’s rights, immigration, voting rights, education, gun safety, and the list goes on and on.

For me, today is much more about moving forward. Fighting on. Making my voice heard. Committing to making a difference where I am. It is a present moment, future-focused day. What’s done is done. It is what is.

But, it is not normal + it is not ok. So, now it’s time to gather, congregate, unify, walk, write, speak, create, and work for the world that we know is possible.

We put protest/marching signs up on our kitchen window. We’re on the 1st floor + there’s a busy sidewalk that goes right past this window… so this is our way of “marching” today.

While our entire podcast is not dedicated to today’s marches around the world, today’s episode is our manifesto on living our lives to the fullest and what that means to us. It is about Lina + I celebrating the little and big things in our life – from global issues that affect us, to everyday goals that we have met, to big plans for our future, to just celebrating the joy that it is to be able to have a podcast that gives us a dedicated, committed time to communicate and laugh with each other – and you all.

You know, in my opinion, telling stories, listening to each other, talking with each other… that’s the one thing that will make a difference. That’s the key to having an open mind. To growing. To changing. To learning. To fighting. To creating a better world.

And while there is much room for much improvement in the United States and around the world, it is not as bleak as the new President expressed in his Inauguration speech yesterday (or so I have read and seen clips of – still haven’t broken down and watched it).

President Trump painted a very dark picture; a picture of Americans who are passive and are living in total violence and complete despair thanks to foreigners + elites. And, while things are not as great as they should be in the US and around the world, there is a spirit in humanity that is good. I have seen it. I feel it. A spirit of hope and coming together. Of acceptance and willingness to sacrifice, help, and lift up. And that spirit is being tapped into all over the world today. A spirit of people uniting to stand up to say that this is not how it is supposed to be. This is not the way. And that we will make our voices heard.

No, Americans are not a helpless people who need a someone to save them. Americans, are people who believe that “Yes we can”.  We have a rugged-anything is possible-it takes a village-you can be whoever you want-let’s help each other along the way-spirit. American does not need to be made great again. It is pretty damn great + beautiful – even in the midst of the turmoil of the present day. And, if we can simply let go of what divides us, and, instead, observe how pretty damn great + beautiful we are, if we can simply embrace what unites us… then we will be living up to the American ideal that is still burning deep within us all.

All we have to do is live our lives with authenticity and openness, with integrity and honesty, with love and grace. And share our stories of hope, fear, joy, pain, and struggle with each other.

  1. Have you read Rebecca Solnit’s Hope In The Dark? She writes of example after example of that spirit of coming together, making change together, reshaping our world, etc. I thought of you often when I was reading it last winter; if I had it with me now I’d certainly be re-reading certain parts.

    1. I have not read that book, Meghan. But I will most definitely look it up! Thank you so very much for the tip! I’m on it. xoxo
