silver + gold: a playlist for december

here we go, people. let the holidays begin! lina and i have begun the decorating process… just a little bit here + there right now. the christmas tree adventure is planned for tomorrow! but, while we’ve been working on some of our decorations, we have, of course, gotten out all of our christmas music and let it run all day long. it’ll be like that for the rest of the year. hehe.

now i know some of you out there are like me… you looove christmas music + you love to fill your days with good music. so, for the month of december, i have gathered music from far + wide and created a december playlist (which i am doing every month to celebrate turning 40 this past fall.) for us all! be prepared for all kinds of holiday music: traditional tunes with bing crosby mixed with she + him mixed with swedish singers like peter jöback mixed with folk styles mixed with hymns… and so much more. it’s a little bit of everything. and it’s everything that i completely love.

i hope that as you prepare for the holiday season, as you go about your busy days out + about, and your cozy days + nights at home, this playlist will bring you joy. i hope that it will inspire you to laugh and reflect and be silent and dance all at the same time.

so, go on and click on the image below or on the spotify link { here } to get all access to your december playlist! enjoy!!

happy holidays, friends!

i’m moving my blog!

it’s sunday morning + i have no idea what i’ve gotten myself into! i’ve set up my own space on the internet for self hosting and i think my new web hosting company is in the process of transferring my blog ( this blog you are on right now! ) over to my new space. all of this is so exciting + frees me up to do so much more, like to create a whole new website and keep my blog! but, warning! my blog may be a little crazy for the next few days, or disappear, or… I don’t know. in any case, this is fun stuff!!

i have been thinking about moving over to a self hosted website for about a year now, and i decided that since i am physically moving to another country, i might as well move my blog/website at the same time. make sense, right?

so, wish me luck + and hang on! don’t leave me or think that i have disappeared, depending on what happens. and… just a head’s up, you may have to choose to follow me again once i am moved over to my new space. but, i’ll keep you posted on the progress, i promise! until then, just keep checking back here. it should (hopefully) be normal for a while!

how are you spending your sunday/or monday?!

asheville + music + me

it’s friday night… and what am i doing? i’m sitting under a blanket, with candles lit all around the living room, sipping on some cold mountain winter ale, blogging away, + catching up on some thursday night shows. yep. the weekend is here, and i’m at home nesting. and i don’t feel bad about that for one second. i’m not feeling old or boring or lazy or anything negative because i’m staying home on a friday night. it feels pretty damn great actually.

you see, the reason i don’t feel bad is because i live in asheville… where any + every night is like friday night. just last night (thursday) my love + i went to see some live music at a local brewery about 5 minutes from our home. like many ashevillians, we do that quite often in the middle of our regular week routines. because it’s asheville. and because we can. and, in asheville, music is as much of a god as beer and art and nature and food are.

asheville’s music scene is incredible. there are music venues dotted all over the city – downtown, west asheville, east asheville. the breweries are constantly having local + not-so-local bands come to their tasting rooms to entertain the beer lovers. there are concert halls, little holes-in-the-wall, pubs and funky dives where you can find music any night of the week.

and it’s not just little, local no-name artists either. big names have played here. big names still play here. but, there are also grassroots bands and groups and singer/songwriters who play here. it’s such an eclectic mix of music opportunities. the main thing i’m trying to say is this: if you like music, asheville is a city to visit.

for me, asheville has been heaven for the past year. i have had the incredible, amazing joy of seeing three of my all-time favorite groups play here. on top of that, i’ve gotten to know other local musicians/artists, thanks to having the chance to meet so many cool, new, artist friends since moving back. basically, what i am saying is this: i’ve been both star-struck + made some sweet, dear, new friends + been inspired my music dreams all in a matter of a few months.

check out a few of the amazing acts that i’ve seen in the past year. imma lucky girl!

the avett brothers

the wilhelm brothers

these guys are good friends of ours who live in asheville – and who we are planning a european tour with in 2015. yep! lina and i will be setting up some venues across europe with them +  touring with them… me photographing, lina designing + perhaps singing. it’ll be a tour of friends + music + pure joy, i promise! these guys are total sunshine. can’t wait!

my love has even gotten in on some of the musical artistry action in asheville, meeting for a jam session + leading the group with her amazing voice singing “hallelujah”. so much fun.

whether you are looking for a big, blown-out, exciting concert, or a cozy, intimate one, you will be sure to find both here in asheville. so, friends, when you’re in asheville, here’s what you do: eat brunch downtown. visit the biltmore estate. ride on the blue ridge parkway + do some hiking. visit breweries. do a little local, fair-trade shopping. hang out in the river arts district. drink coffee (fika!) at a local coffeehouse. visit museums + art galleries. people watch. and… listen to music.

there is so much to do in asheville. so much i love about asheville. but, the music scene… it is freaking amazing. get online, book a ticket, + trust me.

peace out, man. light + love. xx

the reynolds family goes camping: a short video by

about a month ago, lina + i did something that i loooove to do: we went camping. my brother, nick, announced to us sometime in august that he thought we should go camping as a family during the autumn – since we were all in the same place now… and not spread out across the state or across the ocean. so, the 3 of us decided that a camping trip to celebrate my dad’s 70th birthday was the perfect reason to make this family outing happen.

we left on a friday afternoon for hot springs, nc, and set up camp until midday. while we were there, we basically made delicious camp food, sat by the fire, read some books, wandered a bit, drank beer, cooked + ate more food, and sat by the campfire some more. it was a magical weekend – one that i will never forget. one that i have stashed away in the recesses of my memory, knowing that i will draw upon those cozy late night, dark moments around the fire or those chilly mornings of preparing camp breakfasts together, for the rest of my life. everything was so simple + slow + real + intentional. we were off the grid + unplugged. just enjoying the surroundings + each other.

well, my amazing wife did her amazing thing and created a video of the weekend – so now i have a some live action memories of what happened that weekend; and i cannot express with words what this little video means to me. i cry every single time i watch it.

if you’d like, take a little look, and see how we spent our family weekend together. i’m gonna watch it again + again + again. hehe.

thank you, my love. you have ,melted my heart + touched me so deeply with this. i will cherish it always.

10 questions + 10 answers

time for a fun little post! the other day, my love posted 10 questions + answers on her blog, inspired by her cousin’s blog. so, i thought i’d continue the fun + answer my love’s questions, then pose 10 new questions for you guys. it’s totally voluntary, but i’d love it if some of you joined in and spread the fun even further!

ok. here ya go. 10 things that my love asks. and a chance to get to know me a little bit better:

1. What’s your morning routine?

if i’m really good, i have prepared the coffee the night before + set the timer. i usually wake up before it brews – i’m an early riser. so, the first thing i do is check my phone (i have GOT to STOP making that first. stupid addiction) + while i wait for the coffee. when i get up, i wash my face, slip on a sweatshirt, and grab my coffee. then, i spend some time meditating + talking with my love. not necessarily in that order. just depends on the morning. usually i meditate first. then, i prepare some breakfast. i may make a phone call to my mom just to say hi. and finally, i’m ready for some writing + blogging.

meditation balcony hand

2. Which part of the year is your favorite, and why?

i seriously cannot answer this. if we are talking seasons, i always love the one that i am in. truly. no kidding. i actually try to live in the present moment + appreciate what is going on around me in that moment. but, i can tell you what i love best about each season: spring – that bright green color on the trees just after the leaves have popped out, flowers, that feeling of rebirth. summer – water, sunshine, long days. autumn – everything about nature, bluegrass music, festivals, my birthday! winter – snow, fires, hot drinks, blankets, twinkle lights, christmas music!

seasons trees

3. What’s your favorite drink?

oh lord. this is so very hard. i love me some coffee. i drink it all day long. every day. it’s probably my absolute favorite.

4. What would you do on a day off?

hmmm… the perfect day off would consist of these things (not necessarily in this order): my love. coffee in bed. the woods. a movie. some beer. a few friends. music. time alone. dinner out. an open road.

path in the woods

5. Where would you like to go at this moment?

there are so many places. but, if i could hop on a plane right this minute, i’d go out west. to new mexico or wyoming or oregon. i need to get my wild + free on.

6. What’s your favorite dish?

nachos. tacos. mexican food. which reminds me… i gotta travel to mexico. how amazing would the food be?!

nachos diablo royale

7. What are the first five things you would save out of a fire?

our cat. my computer. some books/journals. my granddad’s framed prayer. my wedding ring (we have tattoos now, so we don’t wear our rings).

8. What’s your favorite book, movie, and tv-series?

  • book: to kill a mockingbird – the book that taught me all about racism + equality
  • movie: across the universe – a movie using the beatles’ songs… reminding me to live life to the fullest + to embrace the adventure of living
  • tv series: i am totally the walking dead obsessed!

9. What’s your favorite music right now?

anything americana + folk! i need to feel grounded, rooted, and authentic right now. these styles of music do just that for me. inspiring me with their quirky, unique, bluegrassy sounds. and, right now, my favorite group is elephant revival. got them on repeat on my spotify account.

10. What are you looking forward to in the next week?

T H A N K S G I V I N G ! family. food. traditions. and the beginning of the holiday season. such pure, simplistic joy. i love thanksgiving so freaking much! and it’s only one week away! which reminds me… i need to begin my grocery list for all of the yummy food.

Feel free to answer the following 10 new questions and keep it going!

  1. What moment from your life always makes you smile when you remember it?
  2. What are three words to describe who you are (not what you do)?
  3. What movie or tv-series could you watch over + over?
  4. What song would be the soundtrack to your life?
  5. Who is the most memorable/interesting person that you have met in 2014, and why?
  6. You’ve been given a month to travel! Where are you going to go?
  7. What websites do you visit every day?
  8. What is your nighttime routine?
  9. What is your favorite space in your home? Describe it!
  10. What are you longing for?

have fun! i can’t wait to read your answers!

the day that love came to north carolina

Screen Shot 2014-10-10 at 10.43.57 PM

here we are. in 2010. at a rally for marriage equality in raleigh, north carolina.

yesterday was day one in north carolina.

what does that mean? it means that it was the first day, ever, that same sex couples were finally treated as equals. the first day that same-sex couples received the right to file for marriage licenses and get married. and the first day that my love and i were legally, officially, recognized as a married couple in my home state.

it’s been a long time coming, and for a while, i wondered how long we would have to wait to be able to have the right to marry and build a life with the one that we love. but, tonight i saw same sex couples getting married in asheville, north carolina. like legally married. not a commitment ceremony, but a real live, legal marriage. with paperwork from the government and all. in north carolina!

it’s a long legal story, that sped up in intensity this past monday after a ruling in virginia struck down the law that defined marriage as only between a man and a women. in other words, it was unconstitutional (illegal). that ruling opened the door for other states to also strike down their own bans on same-sex marriage. north carolina has had a ban on gay marriage for a while now, but i didn’t really believe that the law would be stuck down anytime soon.

so, after a lot of drama and a lot of waiting, and hoping, and wishing, and last ditch political and horrific stalling tactics by republican, and almost giving up, at the last minute on friday night, a judge in north carolina ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional (because of what happened in virginia on monday). and then, within minutes, same- sex marriages were allowed to begin. I couldn’t believe it when i saw it in my twitter feed.

when i saw the news on twitter… i ran to lina. we stood in amazement. just looking at each other. suddenly, within a flash, our marriage was recognized in our state. suddenly we were a married couple in north carolina – with rights and privileges. not just two girls living together. but, legitimately married. it felt amazing. and i could hardly breathe.

here we are, literally minutes after same sex marriage became legal in north carolina last night. we had to celebrate with a photo of a real, live, legally recognized married couple!

the government offices where you get marriage licenses stayed open late all across the state after the ruling in favor of same sex marriages. and couples poured in to get their licenses, and then immediately get married. there were ministers and clergy available everywhere to marry people right on the spot.

we decided to hop in the car and head down to the government building to be a part of this historic moment, and when we arrived, we saw that there were people milling about everywhere. couples were scattered in groups on the stairs in front of the building, getting married right there. other couples cheered them on. lina and i joined in. it is unbelievable how this truly affects the lives of so many people and so many families. it is so amazing that this has happened. that it is real.

to be clear, lina and i do not have to get married again. we were married in sweden almost 5 years ago, and as of last night, that marriage is now legal in north carolina! so, no ceremonies for us. only celebrations that our love and our marriage is something that is real and valid and recognized now. *deep breath* amazing.

here are photos of the wedding ceremonies and celebrations happening just after the ruling. it was so emotional and powerful and unbelievable…

IMG_8663 IMG_8667 IMG_8668

the rest of the photos are not mine. i pulled them off of different places on twitter. but, it shows you just some of the couples in asheville that got marriage licenses and got married. what a huge, mind-blowing, heart-exploding day! look at how cute these couples are – and they (along with lina and i) get to celebrate their love – and be recognized as full, legitimate spouses!

yep. yesterday was day one. the day that love came to north carolina. the day that equality and justice won. i am so proud. so excited. and so overjoyed. and you know what else? it really did feel different walking around today, holding my love’s, my wife’s, hand – knowing that we are not just two women who live together. but, in the eyes of the law of north carolina and the united states, we are legally married. it is a binding contract, affording us the same rights and privileges as opposite gender couples. and i cannot adequately describe to you how incredible this feels.

yesterday, love won.

the rapture of being alive

undoubtedly this was the perfect day. the perfect way to usher in a new decade, a new year, and a new season of my life. it was simple. authentic. peaceful. it filled with nature + food/drink. but, most importantly, i had my amazing family around me. my love even skipped class to be with me the whole day – and that’s a big, huge deal. from the sunrise breakfast in bed to the late night sipping on bubbles, and everything in-between, my birthday was magical, glorious, and overwhelmingly perfect.

thank you to everyone who left your wishes and love here on the blog, on Facebook, or on instagram. my heart is full and i am still overflowing with joy and gratitude. i’ve got a little quote to sum up exactly how i feel:

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

making time for my love

lina and me

Whoa, life has been busy lately. So crazy… and I have been no where near living any semblance of a regular life. I mean, nothing’s been really bad. A tiny bit of stress, but just so much other stuff to focus on mostly. And, I have been so thankful that I have been here to give my attention to other people and other things for the past 3 and a half months, but I need me time. More importantly, I need me and Lina time.

I’ve been thinking… in addition to communication and respect and honesty, the one thing that I find so important in marriage/relationships is making time for each other. Just the two of you. And, while I’d love to book that ticket to some island and just go dangle my feet in a pool with my love beside me for a week, I know that is not possible. However, it is most definitely possible to set aside time for each other – just my love and me. So, that’s what we’re gonna do. Of course, there are lots of amazing people to see and things to do this weekend, but, we will also carve out time to just sit in our home, stuff our faces with popcorn and wine, and binge on True Blood’s last season. We will make some meals together, drink coffee on the balcony together, and work in our studio together.

Yep, for the next few days, I’m giving all my attention to the one who makes my world go ’round. Happy Friday Eve, peeps!!

Peace & love. xx

40 | a playlist + photo challenge for september

happy september, all you lovelies out there! i love this month. i love how it is a transition month, moving us from the last long days of summer, to the colorful, cozy days of autumn (or vice-verse, if you live in the southern hemisphere. you know what i mean… winter to spring). this september is extra special to me. and here is your warning: you may be annoyed by me by the end of the month.

you see, i am turning 40 this month! and i am super excited. not scared, not upset, not anything, but joyful and grateful – and in the mood to celebrate all 30 days (and 10 more days into october. hehe.). it feels like this is a high milestone, bigger than the ones of the past. 16, 18, 21, 25, 30. they were all big, of course. rites of passage and such. but, this seems monumental. like a huge shift. and, while that may be scary for some, it feels exciting and overwhelming (in an amazing way).

therefore, i want to celebrate. all. month. long. poor lina. poor you, too, dear readers.

i want to celebrate that feeling of coming into my own. and the knowledge that it just just better (even if it gets worse or difficult). it’s always a journey of transformation and growth. ever-moving forward. never backward. always up higher and much deeper. and i welcome that. i cherish that.

september playlist

click on the photo above to be redirected to the playlist on spotify.

so, here’s what i’ve done. i’ve decided to make a playlist on spotify. yay! something that incorporates lots of new songs, but with a definite “liz” feel to them all. i found them mostly all on the radio – listening to a local, independent, channel that plays things that are as far away from top 40 music as possible. then, i just put them all together. all 40 of them (40 on purpose, you know. wink, wink.). i also decided that for the next year, until my next birthday, i will create a playlist every month – and i am super duper looking forward to capturing my 40th year in music!

click on the title or the photo above to go to spotify and follow the playlist (40 | september.14).

i’d love to share music with you for the month. if you have any suggestions for october’s playlist, i’m already beginning to assemble songs and ideas. just leave a comment and let me know!

i also did something else. i created a photo challenge for the month! i haven’t created a challenge since may (i think). it was so great to have a break, after about 3 years of photo challenges. and i ended up taking three months off. but, belovelive photo journeys are back starting today!

now, i’ve been racking my brain trying to some up with some kind of theme for weeks. knowing that i wanted to do this. but, nothing came to mind. at. all. until yesterday.

since i had this playlist, and it was something that i was going to use to set the tone/vibe for my september, i decided not to spread myself too thin, but to make my photo challenge based no the playlist. so, this month, we’ve got a music-inspired photo journey – and i am so excited!

i looked at my playlist and hit the “time” button to arrange the songs by time (that way they are also shuffled around a bit). and i went from there creating my photo challenge. so, all 40 songs are there. arranged from the shortest to the longest. and it just so happened that “setting forth” by eddie vedder is the first song! how crazy is that. talk about the universe lining up. hehe.

so, i simply used the titles as the word prompts for the day. now, this may be challenging, or irrelevant, or confusing for all of us. but, i thought, that if we are confused, we can simply listen to (or google!) the lyrics and see if the lyrics or music inspire us in anyway. that should help us decide how to photo something in our every day. this means that we all have bunches of creative freedom with our photos. so, just let the song of the day speak to you, and see what you want to snap for your photo. no pressure. just enjoy. and maybe, you’ll find a new song or two that you love. (remember, most of the songs are new for me too).

so, let’s get out there and take some photos! remember, to use the has tags #bllphotoaday and #mymonthofmusic if you are sharing your photos on instagram or Facebook or twitter. i would loooove to see what you come up with!!

september photo journey

| i have also included a list here of all of the artists and their songs, so you can search for them online, if you would like. just in case you don’t have spotify. they are arranged in the same order as the photo challenge. here, i’ve listed the artist first and then the title of the song. here you go! |

tough to get to. tougher to explain. but, once you get there, you get it.

i have to go to marfa, texas.

you see, my love is in the process of sketching a tent for one of her graphic design classes, and that got me thinking about a place that i ran across on the internet some time ago. a “hotel”, or more like a place to stay, in texas. marfa, texas to be exact. i remembered that i was intrigued by it and thought it’d be awesome to visit there one day. so, since i hadn’t thought about this place in a year or so, i decided to look it up again.

just outside marfa, a tiny little town located in the middle of nowhere in west texas, lies el cosmico. that’s right. it’s a little mexican and a little cosmic = southwestern hippy heaven. at least in my book. among the dirt fields and the tumbleweeds, where the sky meets the ground, and the sun beats down on the dry earth, el cosmico appears to be a little relaxing paradise for those who want to do things a little differently. it’s a place that i am certain lends itself to beauty, funky-ness, and amazing vibes. you see, el cosmico is a “hotel/camping” place of sorts. but. instead of rooms decorated in southwestern and mexican themes, you get the real thing: tee pees, yurts, and rvs. that’s right. just make a reservation, drive your car out into the middle of nowhere, and stay in one of these amazing, classic, funky places – and soak up the atmosphere. crazy amazing, huh?

upon “rediscovering” marfa and el cosmico on the internet, i decided that i simply must go there. like, i will go there. it feels like the perfect road trip for me and my love to experience together – we’ve never been to west texas, we’ve never slept in a tee pee. and we loooove the hippy, community, relaxed vibes of anyplace that deems itself a little bit alternative and off the grid.

so, i’m going. i don’t know when… but sooner, rather than later. and here are photos i’ve found scattered all over the internet demonstrating exactly why this place is on my bucket list…
