today lina and i got a snail mail package from dublin, ireland. that, in and of itself, is awesome, because dublin is one of our favorite cities in the world. in the envelope from our amazing friend, were four headshot photographs of the beatles (!) and a lovely handwritten letter. i was so overwhelmed, i could hardly contain myself. for real. and, knowing our friend, i figured that she had been doing some serious second-hand, vintage shopping. she is the queen (and i truly mean that!) of thrift stores. that girl can find amazing deals… she is a freaking pro. so, i wouldn’t have put it past her to have scrounged through some little bin in some little dublin shop and come across these beauties.
but, she didn’t do that. the story of these photos is like a thousand times better than that. and where these photos come from make them all the more meaningful to us…
nic’s husband’s grandmother passed away, and they recently were in her home, sorting through things, as one does. tucked away between some old vinyl lp’s were these four 8 x 10 photographs. and nic thought of us (because i/we are a super crazy fan of the beatles.) and then she mailed them to us. just because.
so, now, we have these old, moldy, amazing photos from i don’t know when. but, a lady in ireland once treasured them, and now we will. they will be proudly & lovingly displayed somewhere in our apartment. and i will think of an old irish lady i didn’t really know, and our sweet, special friend & her husband every time i see them.
you know, there are days that the sky is so blue that my eyes hurt. it’s a saying i have… like the beatles singing that it makes them cry. what i mean, and what i believe (and hope) they mean, is that sometimes this world is overwhelming… in a good way. for all of the crap that exists, for all of the violence and greed and discrimination and jealousy and poverty and death and just plain meanness there is, there is also love.
there is a person willing to listen. and another person willing to help. there is someone sacrificing something for another. and someone else who makes you feel better with just a smile. there is a person who lets another go first in line. or makes small talk with you, just trying to be friendly.
and there is beauty. the beauty of the sun and the moon and the stars. of trees and lakes and rivers. of the ocean and mountains. of little, fascinating bugs and quiet, delicate animals. there is the beauty of majestic birds and simple house pets.
because the world is so beautiful, because humans are so amazing, because the animals co-exist with us, because space is unknown and vast, because dear friends send you something so very personal, sometimes my eyes hurt. i cry. i can’t breathe. i am overcome with laughter and joy.
love is all there really is. it it you. it is me. it is us. together. it does exist. and it will conquer all.
Ah, because the world is round, it turns me on
Because the world is round, ah
Because the wind is high, it blows my mind
Because the wind is high, ah
Love is old, love is new
Love is all, love is you
Because the sky is blue, it makes me cry
Because the sky is blue, ah, ah, ah, ah
